Bow Wave

The Queen Mary 2 moves slowly up river past the Queen Victoria before turning for her departure into open waters.

I took this handheld with a 70-200mm zoom with 2x converter from the back of a small motor boat. Obviously a tripod was out of the question as the boat was bobbing like a cork in a maelstrom because of the multiple wakes from the flotilla of craft that had come out to see the spectacle.

I therefore cranked up the ISO and opened the aperture wide for a speed of 1/400th. Even so, I had to time my shots so the boat was at the top or bottom of its travel, at which point it was almost stationary for a split second.

You really get the scale of how huge this ship is in this photo! Awesome!

chunter: It's certainly a monster, Helen. But it's just been surpassed in size by the Independence of the Seas, which is painted white. Anyone any ideas why some are white and some black?

Colin you did so well here, I love the way the people are in, now we see how huge the ship really is...they all look like ants.

chunter: Yes, these things are gigantic. They're like floating towns with their cafes, bars and restaurants, casinos, shops, services, swimming pools, cinemas, sports centres. It must be lovely (if it's smooth) to cruise on one.
